What makes Korean Tea different?

Updated: Aug 24, 2023

The popularity of Green Tea has skyrocketed over the past few years as science continues to prove that Green Tea contains powerful antioxidants and nutrients, all of which have incredible health benefits. But, the benefits of Green Tea has been known and utilised by Asian cultures dating back over 4,000 years. Once originating from China, now China, Japan and Korea have all perfected their own variety of green tea with complex regional flavours and aromas.

Hadong, where we source our Korean Green Tea, still employs the traditional methods of cutting and processing their tea by hand. With careful attention to detail, only the best shoots that meet strict standards, are used to create the tea. In comparison, the majority of Green Tea in Japan is cut by machine, allowing for mass production to meet the burgeoning market.

The method of cultivation and processing has a distinct effect on the flavours and consistency of the tea. Korean tea is still made using the traditional method of parching, which requires heating the tea leaves over a weak heat. The end product is a savoury and sweet taste as the amino acid content is increased. Korean Tea is not generally as strong or as bitter as Japanese Green Tea. Japanese Green Tea leaves are cut, carefully steamed and afterwards gently dried before the rolling process. This process lends the tea to a more leafy taste with a sweet, fresh flavour and strong aromas.

It is commonly believed that there are four attributes to green tea and that is respectfulness, peacefulness, quietness and purity, and these attributes should also be present in the tea drinker. Korean Green Tea is perfect for those who enjoy savouring a cup of tea, which allows the flavour to fully hit their palate. Green tea is the perfect way to bring culture and variety into your home.
