    Reading the Tea Leaves

We all love a cup of tea, but your enjoyment needn’t end once you’ve finished drinking it. There could be more to your cup – much more! It could even tell you of your future… The reading of tea leaves is known as tasseography and has existed as an art for hundreds of years. It is used to predict the fate of the drinker from patterns in their left over tea leaves and sprung up in its modern form in seventeenth-century Europe, soon after the tea routes to China had been establi

    What's the Fuss about Matcha?

Why all the fuss about matcha? The world is obsessed with Japanese matcha. The beautiful people are knocking back shots of it at fashion shows. Cafes are serving it in lattes and chefs are turning it into everything from soup to brownies. Japan’s most revered form of green tea has now become a must-have ingredient for the ‘wellness’ set. But what’s the truth behind the health claims? What is matcha? Matcha is a stone-ground powdered green tea used in traditional Japanese tea

How you can make the world a little better?

Wooree Tea are on a mission: to bring the soft, sweet taste of luxury Korean tea to the world. It’s a big ask, as Korea produces just 0.1% of the world’s tea, and very little is exported, but for the past 9 months Wooree Tea have been doing just that from their base in Auckland, New Zealand. The teas they sell are all hand-picked and processed, and are shipped worldwide. Now, they want to take the next step and expand their range to bring more varieties – first harvest green

Taste of Green Tea: Drinks, Dishes & Desserts.

Omelettes are my favorite and I can’t think of a day without eating them. They are so easy to make and can be topped with almost anything. This is my take on a healthy vegetable-filled omelette with a twist. Crack open the eggs and beat them until they form an even consistency without any air bubbles. Add all the veggies and the green tea leaves to the beaten eggs. Add salt to taste and pour the mixture into a non-stick pan. Leave it on medium heat for about 2-3 minutes and f

How Much for a Cup of Tea?

The first pickings of the tea season are generally considered the highest quality and, as such, can fetch much higher prices than those picked later in the year. April usually marks the start of the season in many tea-growing countries and Korea is no different in that respect. Our 1st grade tea is picked from only the topmost, most tender buds during the first harvest in April to give an exceptional light and sweet taste. This tea, like all Korean tea, given their small prod

    Life of a Tea Farmer

Tea has been grown in Korea for well over one thousand years, with some records suggesting the time may even be twice that. Many believe tea was first introduced to South Korea in 828, when it was brought from China and planted on the slopes of Jirisan in Hadong County. The life of a tea farmer here isn’t an easy one, but the reward is in producing some of the finest green tea around. In Hadong, whence we source our green tea, the climate is warm and wet – temperatures range

    O'sulloc Tea Museum

Jeju Island, off the coast of the Korean Peninsula, is a hugely popular tourist destination – in fact, the airline route between it and Seoul is the world's busiest. As such it should come as no surprise that it boasts a museum dedicated to the green tea grown on the island and loved across the country: the O'sulloc Tea Museum. While less well known than the infamous adult-themed sculpture park, Loveland, O'sulloc is nevertheless a popular Jeju destination, especially for tea

    What makes Korean Tea different?

The popularity of Green Tea has skyrocketed over the past few years as science continues to prove that Green Tea contains powerful antioxidants and nutrients, all of which have incredible health benefits. But, the benefits of Green Tea has been known and utilised by Asian cultures dating back over 4,000 years. Once originating from China, now China, Japan and Korea have all perfected their own variety of green tea with complex regional flavours and aromas. Hadong, where we so

    Green Tea and Dark Chocolate

Tea and chocolate. The world’s most popular drink and its best loved confection. Seems an obvious combination, right? Perhaps it’s one you enjoy already. There is however an interesting and healthy alternative to the usual builder’s tea and chocolate biscuit, and that’s green tea and dark chocolate. Tea drinking, especially in Korea, often focuses on purification and cleansing, and so dark chocolate, with less sugar than the milk varieties and more antioxidants even than ‘sup

Korean Green Tea and Food Pairings

Do you typically enjoy eating cheese with a glass of wine in hand? Why not try pairing cheese with a cup of green tea instead? The pairing of green tea and cheese is a healthier alternative without the calories or alcohol content that wine has.

Much like wine, green tea contains both tannins and astringency, meaning it pairs well with many different flavours of cheese. Green tea can be used to complement, contrast or enhance the flavour of many types of cheeses. Similar gui

Why Europe prefers black tea to green tea

Europeans love black tea. Each region has its own cultural preferences for black tea, such as Germany’s “three-tier” tea, Russia’s tea with sugar and lemon, or Britain’s “builder’s tea” that is strong black tea with sugar and milk. The reason for black tea’s popularity in Europe can be traced back to tea trades between China and the UK around the 18th century. Contrary to popular belief, tea first made its way from Asia into Europe through Holland and Portugal. Britain only j

How the ancients took their tea.

How do you drink your green tea - straight up, with milk or as a matcha latte? Well, I invite you to expand your horizons, as I introduce you to a few ways that ancients took their daily dose of tea. 1. Thai tealeaf balls. This was an ancient recipe from Thailand, and was served with salt, oil, garlic, lard and dried fish. It must have been a flavorful explosion in the mouth! 2. Tibetan Tea Cream. Ancients from Tibet churned a mixture of tea, barley, salt and goat’s milk butt

    The Humble Teaware Master

Simplicity. That’s what makes Korean teaware stand out from its Chinese and Japanese counterparts. Korean teaware does not boast of elaborate designs, but focuses on being functional and natural. If there is one person who understands the essence of Korean teaware making, that person is Park Jong Il. Park Jong Il lives high on the mountains, and his studio and kiln are conveniently located close to his house. Nearby forests provide him wood to fire his teaware, so it is no wo
